Exhilarating White Knuckle Experience
August 2021
Having spent nearly two years not doing very much, my husband and I decided that we were long overdue for a bit of an adventure. And that adventure was to be white water rafting.
We had done white water rafting twice before –one experience in Bali was outstanding and our second experience was frankly poor. So booking a two hour session at the National White Water Centre located in Snowdonia National Park could have gone either way. As it happens, we found this centre to be extremely well organised with excellent equipment. We were in rafts for six people with a qualified guide who was in control of the raft the whole time. We had to paddle very hard when instructed to do so and when going through the rapids had to leap onto the floor of the raft. The rapids are fierce but with our guide issuing clear instructions, at no point did I feel frightened or unsafe. As we watched the other rafts coming down the rapids, however, it did look very scary.
We stayed for one night in a lovely hotel called Plas Yn Dre in the village of Bala which is a quaint place. It boasts a range of antique shops, art galleries and coffee shops. We moseyed around the town for a few hours buying some art as gifts.
The town has a Stonehenge like stone circle which is quite impressive. Bizarrely the stone circle has had a car park built right next to it and the couple of broken caravans across the road do nothing to enhance this tourist attraction.
Dinner at the hotel was delightful despite the Covid restrictions in place at the time.
All in all we judged this to be a successful two day trip and enjoyed the thrill of rafting over the rapids.
